What to Wear for Your St. Louis Senior Photo Session: Senior Girl Style Tips

Everything about your senior photos session should be fun and exciting-including picking out your wardrobe. I have a few tips for you to help keep the process stress-free and to make sure you are confident and gorgeous for your photos.

Wear what you love!

Make sure you love the outfits you are planning to wear. You should feel confident and beautiful in your clothes because confidence shows on camera. When you love what you are wearing, you will automatically look amazing.

Make sure your clothes fit properly

Your clothes should flatter your body and bring attention to your favorite features. Clothes that are too tight or too loose will create an unflattering shape which may make you feel self conscious, and self conscious is the last thing you want to feel during your session.  On a related note, make sure you iron your clothes and keep them on a hanger in between wardrobe changes. Wrinkled clothes look sloppy and will cause a distraction from you.

Avoid Bright Colors

If you have used the color to highlight your history book, do not wear it for your session. Bright colors tend to cast an unflattering color onto skin, and that color is difficult to remove during editing. Also, those bright colors often clash with the environment which looks unnatural and busy. Solid colors and monochromatic palettes photograph beautifully and ensure that you, and not your clothes, are the focus of the photo.

Let’s talk about the length of your skirts and dresses

Short skirts are adorable and totally fine to wear for your session, but keep a couple things in mind. First, if you wear a short skirt, you will want to cover up on top, and vice versa. You don’t want to be overexposed, and you want your photos to have a classy feel. Remember, you want to love these photos now as well as when you’re in your 40’s. Second, if you wear a short skirt, you will be limited in the poses you can do while wearing the skirt. This won’t be a problem as long as you bring a variety of clothing options that will allow you to sit, squat and lay down during your session.

Patterns, Stripes and Logos

Patterns and stripes are great as long as they do not overwhelm you. You don’t want anything to distract from you. Generally, a medium pattern or stripe will be more flattering in photos than large stripes or really large or busy patterns. Conversely, really small stripes and patterns can create a weird effect called moire. Moire is difficult to detect on the back of the camera and cannot always be removed during the editing process. For this reason, I recommend avoiding ribbed t-shirts and tight patterns such as gingham.

Unless you are wearing a college t-shirt, I advise avoiding logos on your clothing. Logos are distracting and will date your photo. Remember, we want your photos to be timeless and classic.

Underwear

Believe it or not, your underwear is just as important as your clothes. I suggest wearing seamless, flesh-toned bras and underwear. If you have colored undergarments, check to make sure you can’t see the colors through all of your outfits. Seriously, try on all of your outfits with your underwear and check carefully to ensure you cannot see through anything. You will be happy you did!

There are a lot of fashion rules and advice from a lot of different sources. I think the most important thing you can do is wear the clothes you love that showcase your personality and that make you feel beautiful. I can’t wait to see you at your session!
